What is Drool Rash?

Because babies have such sensitive skin, it's not uncommon for them to develop a drool rash, especially when teething.

Drool rash is a red rash that normally appears around baby's mouth. Babies typically drool a lot - and even more so while they teethe - and the constant moisture can eventually start irritating baby's sensitive skin and cause little red bumps to appear.

It may be a bit alarming when you first notice the drool rash forming. It can get quite red which makes it look like it would be itchy or painful.

However, it's one of those things that looks worse than it really is. It's also one of those things that usually gets worse before it gets better. It may get even more red and spread to their cheeks and neck although it's typically prevalent right around your baby's lips.

Drool rash is harmless and in most cases, your baby will probably be completely oblivious to it. Parents, take heart - it will go away when their drooling ceases. There's no need to rush your baby to the emergency room.

There are also ways to help minimize it during the teething stage to keep baby's skin from being too affected by it. The most important thing is to keep their face as dry as possible to keep the drool from irritating their skin more than it already is.

The teething stage can be a daunting one with all kinds of symptoms and nuisances. It can last quite awhile and will continue to come and go as your baby grows so be prepared for a lot of drool and persistent teething rashes.

However, in the big scheme of things, this is just a small part of their life that passes quickly so remember to enjoy each moment, drool rash and all.
